Grace Shaw is on the run from her crazy ex-boyfriend who refuses to believe their relationship is over. He's a cop and is willing to use police resources to track her down. So Grace comes up with a plan and tricks his fellow brothers in blue into thinking he is crying wolf a couple of times when he reports her missing. Little does she know she'll go running into the arms of a real wolf when she finally makes her escape for real.

She just wants to be left alone, but then she meets Hunter Tate - the alpha of the Black River Pack. Grace tries to hold Hunter at arm's length, but there's just no reasoning with an alpha male werewolf who insists she's his mate.

This is book one in the Black River Pack series. Each novella will feature a different couple.

Crying Wolf Black River Pack 1 edition by Rochelle Paige Paranormal Romance eBooks

It was a quick read that lacked character depth and felt a bit rushed. Some parts were rather unbelievable, and that made the story feel shallow.

First, the way Grace escapes from her ex wasn't believable. After she came back the first time, he would have tried really hard to make sure she wouldn't be able to leave a second time -- like, making sure she had no access to money so she couldn't get transportation to leave. That's what an obsessive, abusive partner would do. He doesn't seem to have reacted much (apart from beating her up). It doesn't make sense.

Second, considering that Grace had been avoiding Hunter since she arrived in town, and that she's on the run from her stalker ex-boyfriend, how is it that she's not freaked out when Hunter tells her, "Go home for the night before I change my mind and take what's mine even if you're not ready to give it to me yet"? I haven't been stalked and even I find that creepy. I mean, they haven't even had a conversation, for crying out loud. If they'd been talking and acknowledged the attraction, then him saying this wouldn't be such a surprise or a big deal. But they haven't been talking.

Third, Grace trusted Hunter way too easily for someone with her background and experiences. She didn't fight for her independence, she just let him take over and do everything. He kept important information from her but she didn't have much of a reaction when she found out. There doesn't seem any real basis for such unquestioning trust. She should have much more difficulty trusting him, based on her background with her ex.

Fourth, she has cuts and bruises and a concussion and the moment they arrive back from the emergency room, they're having vigorous sex. He isn't gentle with her, oh no... he "hammers" into her repeatedly (yes, that word was used!). And he's supposed to care about her. Right.

I'm so curious about Eliza and Spencer's story -- it looks to be much more emotional than this one -- but I'm a little reluctant in case it's just as shallow as this one.

Crying Wolf Black River Pack 1 edition by Rochelle Paige Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

I saw this book for free on and decided to give it a try. It was ok, needs a lot of work. The plot itself was worth two stars. I liked the story of the two lovers together but the writing needs a lot of improvement.

There was a lot of second person telling in the beginning of the story, actually that's all there was and it was dragging. There could have been a lot better with more character development and learning about characters through other methods of writing instead of just having the character tell her story. The pace of the story was up and down. There wasn't any balance in getting to know the characters and informing readers of their backgrounds. The information would just come out all in one page and that was it. The "love" scenes were not good. I just skipped those pages because they were not appealing whatsoever. I found myself cringing at the descriptions.

I gave the next book a try to see if the series gets better.

This story is a paranormal erotica with slight romance.
Grace Shaw is 20 years old and she’s on the run from her abusive, manipulative ex-boyfriend, Sam. He’s a cop and swooped into her life right after her parents died. She thought she’d be safe with him and he became her whole world.
I really liked Grace in the beginning. She’s determined to survive and spent months on the run, always outwitting Sam, but she’s finally had enough and decided to make a stand in Wolf’s Point. She found a waitressing job at a local bar and her attraction to the owner, Hunter Tate, is earth-shattering. Hunter feels the same way and instantly knows she’s his mate. He’s a wolf shifter, the alpha of his pack, and brings her into his world.
Though their relationship progressed quickly, the love felt a little forced. She tried to keep her distance, wary to trust another man, but a little incident (which is never explained to her) completely changes her mind. She lets Hunter take control just as she let Sam but at least Hunter would never hurt her.
The climax with the bad guy happened at around 60ish percent of the ebook and Hunter explained how the wolf pack worked for the rest of the book. There’s a big unanswered question left by the end will she be turned into a werewolf? You’re led to believe that Grace will stay human and die after a normal human lifetime (though she won’t age) and Hunter will live for about another hundred years after she dies. Is this for real or did I miss something?
The side characters were interesting. Hunter’s brothers, Spencer and Parker, will later have their stories. I really like Parker but I’m not crazy about Spencer after the insensitive way he treated his mate for the past year.
The novella is written in 1st POV. There were a few typos but nothing too major that took me out of the story.
3 Stars
